December Tree - Thaw Malin iii

I have enjoyed this view over many years while walking past and through into a more enticing angle. Today the wind was moving too fast and I settled in the lee of a pine tree grove. The sky gave me glimpses of greatness, but the clouds held only for seconds and were gone...

The Dark and the Light

I know it's not a 'pretty picture'...a dying cedar tree. If you look at my work, the majority falls within the generally accepted realm of what is beautiful or pleasing. If you form an impression of what you think I'm like in person based on it, you may end up pretty far off the mark. In my life I have often been drawn to things that are not pretty in the traditional sense. I see beauty in the ususual. I have a fondness for reptiles and kept large lizards for many years. I love bats. I used to grow carnivorous pitcher plants and was recently thinking of getting more. I'm fascinated with the biology and psychology of mental illnesses. I like to understand the motives behind what people do or say and take little at face value. I think medical examiner would be a pretty cool job.

Perhaps I need beauty in my art. The light to balance out darker side of life in general, but you can't have one without the other. Ignorance may truly be bliss, but I choose to understand and accept that everyone has both dark and light within and to deny this is to not know yourself.

So this cedar tree with its octopus like tentacles reaching out in all directions is not so much an anomaly for me, as it is just another part of myself.

About the painting:

I used a glowing, orangey background to make the time of day less easily pinpointed as well as making the tree feel even more isolated since you can't see it's surroundings.

Winter Eve - Thaw Malin iii

"Winter Eve", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I could not resist another field of Little Bluestem grass. This is a tree I love to paint in all seasons. It is near a mailbox which says "Old Hunt Place" and for lack of a better location name, call it just that. Every viewing is different as time and seasons change and weather moves in and out. Sometimes I walk away empty handed, yet still relishing the view... (This painting and anymore I do between now and March 16th, should they be sold, will not be shipped until after March 18th. I will be painting in Australia most of that time visiting penquins, as well as attending a family wedding)...

Heaven Light - Thaw Malin iii

"Heaven Light", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

It rained for many days. This was the closest to blue skies we have had. However, I had to wait until the very end of the day for the sky to rent. Then the colors came tumbling out. Anticipated and welcomed on many levels...

I spent the weekend in Dallas with my brothers, celebrating the life of our Mom who passed away last Friday. I was going to try to do one or two Texas landscapes while there, but... just couldn't. Sometime over the winter months I'll be back down to enjoy Texas country in some new landscapes...
