Fall Foliage in the Smoky Mountains by Palette Knife Painter Niki Gulley

 

Sadly, our Fall Foliage Freedom Tour has reached its end. What an amazing 6 week adventure!!! Fortunately, we might have saved the best for last, visiting Asheville, NC in all of its peak autumn glory the last week of October. I had to squeeze in one last painting opportunity at our gorgeous campsite. 

Of course, one of the challenges of plein-air painting is you never know what is going to change in the scene you are capturing. For instance, our neighbors chose to park their black sedan right here in the middle of our picturesque view. Oh, well! The scenery beyond was still beautiful and I was able to take some photos on my camera to finish this one up at home. It also gave us a good excuse to take a scooter ride on that beautiful 70 degree day and check out the picturesque nature trails in the North Carolina Arboretum. Not a bad way to finish up our immersive autumn trip!

Experience Asheville's Gorgeous Fall Foliage in Niki Gulley's Paintings

Just WOW!!! Our timing in Asheville was perfect. Gorgeous peak color and ideal 70 degree days. The view from our campsite was spectacular and I had to capture those autumn hues before they were gone. Especially since the leaves were falling into my paint as soon as I mixed the next color. I hope you can feel pure joy and energy in this one! And, there may be a little extra real leaf texture as a bonus.

Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley Paints Vibrant Fall Foliage

Today we are touring the Blue Ridge Parkway and Pisgah Forest outside of Asheville, NC. WOW!!!! The fall colors are amazing! I am in my happy place with inspiration at every turn. Just sold through The Good Art Company Gallery! Painted just outside of Santa Fe, the fall colors in were gorgeous! We arrived shortly after sunrise to capture the best light of the day, but unfortunately the temperature was starting out near 32 degrees. Luckily the temperatures rose quickly as the morning wore on, I was able to shed my parka and winter gear, and it ended up being a beautiful day. I hope you, too, enjoy a leisurely drive through the beautiful autumn scenery of New Mexico.

Artist Couple Niki Gulley and Scott Williams Embark on Fall Foliage Freedom Tour

As we depart on our Northeast Fall Freedom Foliage Tour, I can't wait to be surrounded by Mother Nature's beauty and healing ability, and bring you that experience in my creations!

Having been diagnosed with several health issues and autoimmune diseases, I have witnessed first hand the healing power of nature. Hearing the leaves crunch while walking through the woods, listening to the birds sing, gazing in awe at a gorgeous sunrise and sunset, feeling your heart fill near a vibrant field of wildflowers, or just relaxing to the cathartic sounds of ocean waves lapping against the shore, all help reset your soul. That joy, hope and serenity is what I want to share with you in my paintings so that you can feel it, too!

My husband and I stumbled upon this quintessential Tuscan farmhouse while out for a scenic drive this spring. Perched alone on top of this hill, we loved how the incredibly long cypress lined driveway was silhouetted by the sky. The soft light caused the hills to glow the most intense golden chartreuse, and I felt compelled to capture the beautiful scene. Unfortunately that meant I had to set up my easel alongside a rather busy road. Undeterred by the constant parade of racing traffic and horn honking semi trucks, I quickly got to work in order to paint these gorgeous clouds and light before they were gone.

Just sold! I was awestruck by these massive fields of sunflowers blooming in Provence. Seeing this brilliant carpet of gold, with its sea of faces smiling towards the sun, just made me feel happy and I wanted you to experience that joy, too. Exaggerating the tile-roofed house in the distance also adds to that cheerful, whimsical mood of feeling content and like you’ve found your home. Created with palette knife and oil paint, “Bundle of Sunshine” practically leaps off the canvas and comes to life with its vibrant yellow petals and extremely thick three-dimensional oil paint.

Inspired by our travels to Italy, cypress trees rise out of the vast open landscape signaling that you have arrived in Tuscany! Perched on a hilltop with the best views of the surrounding valleys, this villa is set against the perfect backdrop for a romantic escape. The long curving driveway and undulating wheatfields draw your eye back through the rolling hills. Beautiful, billowing clouds drift overhead.  Early morning light casts dramatic shadows creating a rhythm beckoning you to journey up the drive, guiding you to your new getaway you can call home.

Just sold! I saw these cheerful sunflowers and vibrant ruby red Gladiolus planted in my neighborhood every time I got in my car to ran errands  and they were so bright and colorful, I just had to paint them! So this week, I dragged my body out of bed at 5 a.m. to capture them at sunrise before our Texas heat reached 100 degrees. While not normally an early riser, it was well worth it to bask in their glory while I was painting. I hope you, too, can enjoy their sunshine and start your day with a smile.

In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up into the treetops, mesmerized by the scene overhead. I chose uplifting yellows and golds contrasted against a turquoise blue sky with gentle clouds drifting by to lift your spirits. I've arranged the aspens in a spiral pattern so that you have a sense of laying on the ground, surrounded by the forest, connecting with nature and the heavens above.

Utilizing thick, curving paint strokes also adds to that joyful, playful feeling of hope and discovery.
