"Winter Field" - Thaw Malin iii

"Winter Field"

"Winter Field", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

This view of the Allen Farm, across the field and out to sea, while usually warm and inviting, was today cold and windblown. I stepped out of my vehicle to gather my paints and stepped back in quickly to paint from the warmth of the van. As the shadows of the cedars along the fence line lengthened and finally engulfed the field with blue, I thought about the warmth of summers past, swimming and napping on the distant beach. My daydream collapsed as a car pulled up beside me and Robin jumped out bearing the gift of an unscheduled hot chocolate… Yum!

The value of this work of art is $550 USD, but, as my gift to you, for the 7 days of the auction each piece is in from the day it is created, you may start bidding at $100 (before the price becomes $550)… This is my way of saying thank you for enjoying my work and keeping me creating new ones almost everyday. Your interest stimulates and inspires me and has made me a better painter for it.

If you think you'd like to purchase this piece, please click Go to my Auction, bidding starts at $100.00 USD.

"Woods Hole" - Thaw Malin iii

"Woods Hole"

"Woods Hole", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I had three location choices for this painting. One required a long walk through woods and maybe snow drifts to arrive at a long beach walk. Two was a short beach walk. Three was possibly traveling down an un-snow-plowed lane and a walk down 5 or 6 stories of beach stairs. I attempted #3 first. The lane was plowed as was the parking lot. Snow on the stairs was almost non existent. I dallied on top taking scouting photos and checking for wind and temperature. Deciding on full winter attire, I returned to my van to gear up. I grabbed the rest of my coffee, a chocolate bite and container of mixed nuts to fuel my furnace as I painted. I descended down the stairs, stopping at each landing for more precision photos of potential views. The last landing was a killer. I was trapped 20 feet above the beach. Winter storms had left only steep, weeping-wet clay between me and the sands below where once was the bottom most set of stairs. I had stepped in clay like that before. Not only is it slippery on an incline, but it sticks to everything it touches like honey, in a bad sort of way. On the beach directly beneath were more boulders at the waters edge casting great, long, blue shadows from the waning sun. I just couldn't reach them. As I worked, the sun set and lights across the way in Woods Hole slowly flickered on. They were soon followed by the lights of the evening ferryboat chugging into its homeport…

"Weather Moves In" - Thaw Malin iii

"Weather Moves In"

"Weather Moves In", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

The sky was almost clear as I began this painting. It rapidly turned into another type of day as I worked to finish this by sundown. It was low tide and the beach had eaten into the dunes and cliffs another 5 feet since I last was here in spring…

Crumbling Cliff - Thaw Malin iii

"Crumbling Cliff"

"Crumbling Cliff", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

I have not been to this beach for a few months, nor since the storm came through. It is amazing how much was eroded by the large sea and wind which swept past. I have gone back to view paintings I made on the beach in the winter of 1995 and the loss of cliff is really noticeable. It is like 2 feet per year in many places. Boulders I would paint next to then are in the surf zone now. It was great to be in the sand working with the sound of a heavy surf muffling all other thoughts until a rogue wave washed up around my easel's legs...

Menemsha, Short Beach - Thaw Malin iii

"Menemsha, Short Beach"

"Menemsha, Short Beach", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

Cold it was with a west wind. In the van I stayed to paint. The colors were quite wonderful as they all came into bloom with the setting sun. The fishing village off in the distance gave the landscape the finishing touch, barely there, but there all the same...

Wash and Wear - Thaw Malin iii

"Wash And Wear"

"Wash And Wear", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

Nothing like a sunny day with no breeze in the midst of winter. It was just warm enough to work without any gloves. Although, fast I did work with the waves rolling in next to me...

Rhythmic Waters oil painting by Niki Gulley

“Rhythmic Waters V” ©2010 Niki Gulley
12” x 12” oil on canvas

I created this ocean scene with palette knife and extremely thick oil paint to achieve texture and suggest the energy found in nature. I wanted to capture the movement and sounds of the ocean waves crashing against each other. The image is painted around the sides of the 1.5 inch deep gallery wrap canvas so that it looks three-dimensional and can be hung as is without a frame for a contemporary look. These chunky ocean paintings look great in pairs, threes and fours.

To see my “Rhythmic Waters” series in person, stop by my booth at the Art Street Green Bay art show this weekend in Green Bay, WI. For more information on the show, go to artseventsinc.com/artstreet.

Spring Green - Thaw Malin iii

"Spring Green"

"Spring Green", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

Today was the first day of real green back in the landscape. The dune grasses, beach roses and some of the trees are now dangling green leaves and blades. It has felt like a long wait for this moment to arrive. A joyous moment indeed!!!

Another Day - Thaw Malin iii

"Another Day"

"Another Day", this is not quite so small a painting, 9" x 12", oil on canvas panel.

Note: I ran out of my usual small panels. This is a 9" x 12" painting (larger than my normal 6" x 8")... A beautiful evening to be painting above a cliff as the sun settles over the horizon. Waves lap against the sand below. A Northern Harrier swoops low overhead on a flight across to Nomans Island in front of me. I stayed even after I could see no more to paint. The water colors at this time of evening against a fading sky have been spectacular for the past few nights. I am preparing myself to do a piece this late in the day, but the light gives me no chance to mix the colors I want. It is just too dark to see color, only values on a gray scale...

By The Bass Stand - Thaw Malin iii

"By The Bass Stand"

"By The Bass Stand" , this is a Small painting, 6"x 8", oil on canvas panel.

Low tide was a good time to paint this special fishing spot. It helped to illuminate the mussel bed point with all the rocks at its best profile. It also accentuated the usually half submerged rocks in the mid-tide zone along the near beach. Plus a larger area of wet reflective sand was visible. I was lucky, too, that I was the lone vehicle in the parking lot at that hour and could park any way I wanted...
