Creek at Dusk by Barbara Haviland Texas Contemporary Artist

This oil painting was part of a challenge. We used a limited palette, which is always challenging.  I used big brush strokes and bright color. My painting looks like it is at night with the moon shining but not showing. The colors are still there but I feel there is mystery surrounding the scene. I hope you like it and will comment.

Jimmy Longacre_subjective realist landscape paintings_GOOD DAY SUNSHINE

I was set-up and ready to paint, just waiting for the sun to rise over the ridge of the valley.  No point in starting something that was going to radically alter as soon as the sun appeared.  I was anticipating doing a subject that was far to the left of this view, but when the sun rose I found myself fascinated by the illumination of the landscape as I looked directly toward the direction of the sun.  A nice thing that happens in this particular type of lighting is that you get a lot of nice dark silhouette shapes that you can arrange, and the light from behind does a beautiful thing by tracing the silhouette outlines with illuminated edges.  Gorgeous effect, and FUN!

Jimmy Longacre_subjective realist landscape paintings_A SPLASH OF SPRING

I just finished teaching a workshop in Marble Falls, Texas, for the Highland Arts Guild Gallery.  We covered how to use the Notan principle to improve composition and color.  I, also, spent some of the time to get into some instruction on how to use color gamuts to help insure beautiful color harmony.  It was a lot to cover, but a very talented and willing group, so we had a lot of fun and some great results.

Here is one of my paintings that illustrates my results using notan and gamut.  I enjoy teaching this because, no matter what level you're at, understanding these concepts will give an almost automatic elevation of painting results, and a great source of fun and experimentation for the long run.

"Snow and Ice" - Thaw Malin iii

"Snow And Ice"

"Snow and Ice", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

With no back up plan, I was taking my chances driving all the way out to Quansoo Beach hoping to find a view to paint. It was beautiful getting there with the fields along the way covered with recently fallen snow. At the first field I parked and took a photo of the shadows across the old farm road which bisected it. Oh, it was wicked cold out there and I knew any painting done would be from inside my van. This became crystal clear when I saw my car keys locked in the van and I had to find my hide-a-key under the car with cold, bare hands. Coming near the end of the dirt road I realized that no one had driven this far out since the snow storm two days ago. I rounded the last corner out of the scrub oak and shrubbery into the clear, grassy area next to the creek behind the dunes. What usually is a large expanse of parking by the bridge was being crowded out by the high pond and creek water level covered with a few inches of ice. It was a soft, brackish ice and I dared not cross it even just to get on the bridge. But the light was magic, reflecting evening sun off the new wood of the repaired rails and deck of the bridge. The dark, low lying snow clouds added a rich element to the lightness of snow on sand and tawny, winter's beach grass…

The value of this work of art is $550 USD, but, as my gift to you, for the 7 days of the auction each piece is in from the day it is created, you may start bidding at $100 (before the price becomes $550)… This is my way of saying thank you for enjoying my work and keeping me creating new ones almost everyday. Your interest stimulates and inspires me and has made me a better painter for it.

"Cola Creek" - Thaw Malin iii

"blank Cola Creek"

"blank Cola Creek", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

This little stream is known locally as blank Cola Creek. In the autumn when the leaves and acorns fall, a lot get washed into this water shed. Their tannin turns the water the color of blank Cola... (you fill in the blank)

Wasque from Left Fork - Thaw Malin iii

"Wasque from Left Fork"

"Wasque from Left Fork", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

Wasque (way-sque (as in squeek)), off in the distance, is one of the most terrific fishing spots on Chappaquiddick Island. It is the confluence of the Atlantic Ocean and the Sound tides 90 degrees to one another, a turbulent place for waves, fish, bait, boats and fishermen. This view is hardly ever noticed as one drives right past while going to South Beach. The foreground is Herring Creek and the farther body of water is Katama Bay. I only noticed this because I had gotten out of my car and had gone for a bird walk looking for Great Blue Heron in the Creek...

Quansoo Creek - Thaw Malin iii

"Quansoo Creek"

"Quansoo Creek", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

This scene attracted me a year ago, but the pond has been over full of water until now. Only when the dune has been cut open to the sea does it get this low...
