Crossed Purposes - Cowboy and calf oil painting by Debbie Grayson Lincoln

6 X 6 Oil on board
Check with Artist for Availability
It's calf working time-of-year and my favorite for acquiring new images of my preferred subjects - horses and cows and cowboys. These two obviously have different things on their minds.

Concentration - roping cowboy oil painting by Debbie Grayson Lincoln

5X7 Oil on Masonite board $115
Includes shipping and insurance U.S.
So many things have to come together perfectly at once when a cowboy ropes a calf: His horse must be positioned precisely, the rope must be thrown without getting tangled everywhere, then it has to be tied off on the saddle, the horse must stop, cowboy stays balanced on horse, etc. I don't think the cowboy realizes how his face looks at this moment, but I see intense concentration that comes from years of experience and practice. I never fail to be fascinated with the procedure...A GOOD cowboy makes it look effortless.

Gated Community - cowboy oil painting by Debbie Grayson Lincoln

5 X 7 Oil on canvas panel $115
Includes shipping and insurance in US
I know that gated communities, home owner's associations and the like have their place in this world. I just hope I never have to live in one....although, the thought of someone else making decisions  for me, mowing my grass, caring for the trivialities of home ownership and just leaving me alone to paint at times sounds enticing.....
If you've lived in the country as long as I have, you've probably seen every kind of gate there is - and I HATE this kind...the floppy wire ones; made of barbed wire and cedar posts. Often they are made without benefit of an "H frame" so they aren't very sturdy - and I almost ALWAYS scratch myself on the barbed wire unhooking them and then again when I re-close 'em.
I took this photo at Tommy Houston's calf working LAST spring. The gate was more conventional, but the cowboy unhooking it was still having difficulties with it, so I gave him a gate that justified the effort. His chaps were a little too new, also, and the grass was green...a dead giveaway that the photo wasn't taken THIS year in Texas! I may just turn this one into a larger painting...

Wildflower Wanderer - cowboy oil painting by Debbie Grayson Lincoln

8 X 10 Oil on canvas $125

Includes Shipping and Insurance in US

I have never seen the wildflowers in Texas as beautiful as they are this Spring. It's like Mother Nature has been hiding and saving up for 10 years and now spends everything in her account.

The "model" for this image is someone I have come to respect highly - his name is Tommy Houston. Tommy has a ranch near Bluff Dale, Texas that spans 2 counties and is a "real" cowboy and member of a dieing breed. And people that know him speak of his generosity with both his time and his talents, as well as his expertise with horses.

Bandit Betrayal - cowboy gun fight oil painting by Debbie Grayson Lincoln

5 X 6 Oil on Masonite Color Study for larger painting
$115
Includes Shipping and Insurance
send me an email
This is an idea for a painting that I envisioned after my last photoshoot at Doug Prine's place in Nemo, Texas. Before I begin any large work (and this one will be 25 X 30) I sketch it out in pencil, then paint a small, quick version in scale to the larger painting. 5 X 6 is exactly 1/5 of a 25 X 30. Often I change the placement a bit and add more contrast if the composition needs it.
The final version will be much more detailed. I want the horse in the foreground to show his eye very round and excited and appearing to be looking at the bandit in the rear. I see a few minor changes, but will probably stick to this color study fairly close. One thing I DO want to change is the shadow in the lower right and make it look more like another horse and rider.

Rodeo Cowboy

Rodeo Cowboy
24" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

I think this painting is finished....or at least I signed it. I wanted to show the energy, movement and colorful excitement of the rodeo in this painting. It is on a 24" x 24" gallery wrap canvas, painted in oils. At the very start of this painting, the horse was standing. I changed the angle of the horse, and decided that it would be more interesting to have it kicking off the canvas. And moving, not standing. I will go back to the studio tomorrow and probably make a few minor changes and photograph it again. I liked the fringed on the chaps and the mane on the horse....seemed to get all tangled up in the ride. I thank you for viewing this blog, and welcome any comments on my latest painting!
