I painted "Radiating Aromas II" on location while my husband and I were visiting Provence, searching for the perfect lavender field to capture on film and canvas. I loved how these beautiful rows led to the stone farm house with its terra cotta roof in the distance, so typical of the French countryside. The sky was a little hazy that morning, but I thought this was the perfect setting to channel my inner Van Gogh and have some fun with my strokes around the sun. After all, I was near the area that inspired Starry Night! Repeating those circular patterns in the tree line and emphasizing the curve of the purple plantings, help tie background and foreground together to create a harmony and uplifting feeling to the finished painting.

Painting Poppy Fields in Provence with Niki Gulley

What my husband and I didn't expect to find in Provence this summer were miles of poppy fields! We thought we were there much later than when these beauties usually bloom, but it turns out a lot of rain in early spring delayed their growth (and unfortunately the sunflowers, too, which were no where ready to bloom). So instead of painting and photographing sunflowers like we thought, mother nature had other ideas. So, going with the flow, these bright, vibrant stretches of uplifting crimson blooms were tugging on my heartstrings and I just had to capture them. I loved every minute of it, and I hope you can feel that joy, too!

My husband and I recently were teaching and leading an Art Trek in Provence, and we were able to spend a couple of extra days exploring the area before everyone joined us. While in pursuit of the perfect lavender field to paint and photograph, we came across this gorgeous field of purple / pink blooms, which we found out later was Clary Sage. The flowers were just breathtaking and stretched for what seemed like miles. Finding a tiny bit of shade, I set up my easel and went to work capturing all of that royal glory. And, it was a good thing I painted it when I did because the following week, my shade tree was roped off! I hope you, too, can experience the beauty of this joyful place.

On a trip to Provence this summer, I set up my easel by this gorgeous lavender field. The color and aroma explosion were out of this world – a painter's and photographer's dream come true. Words can't even describe how special that moment was! I wanted to focus on the perfectly planted purple rows, as perspective lines converge, leading you to this joyful spot. I hope you can smell the amazing scents and feel your spirits lifted while gazing into this scene.

Day 3, Provence Art Trek: Les Baux / Chateauneuf

On the third day of our Provence Art Trek, we visited the picturesque town of Les Baux, perched atop its rocky outcropping with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside below. Some folks visited the castle, galleries and shops while the painters set up in this quiet plaza capturing the unique stone residences, medieval cathedral or picturesque courtyard.

In the afternoon we went to one of the most renowned wine towns in the world and sampled some amazing Chateaunef du Pape wines.

Next year we will be leading a Foodie Trek to Spain in March and Tuscany in October, and in August we'll be teaching an Art Trek in Iceland. Day 2, Afternoon Location: Arles 

Provence Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Recently we lead an Art Trek to Provence where we visited the ancient Roman city of Arles, and also where Van Gogh lived for 18 months. While retracing the famous artist’s footsteps, we got to experience his colorful vision of rather ordinary painting locations. Last stop on this impressionist’s tour, we chose to paint at the asylum where he stayed, creating our own versions of the lovely courtyard garden. What an amazing experience to feel his presence and channel our own inner Van Gogh!

Provence Art Trek - Painting and Photography Workshop

Day 1 

On the first night of our Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop that my husband, Scott Williams, and I led in southern France, we arrived at our B and B and went into town that evening for an amazing dinner at a Michelin-star restaurant. The food was out of this world, the weather was perfect for dining outside, and our new group was great company!

The next morning, our painters stayed at our b and b and painted right there since the grounds were so beautiful. I loved how the typical Provencal trees framed the composition and I could get a real sense for Cezanne's love of the landscape. Meanwhile, the photographers visited a nearby 11th century Abbey and took some incredible photographs. We met up later that day and headed to the nearby town of Arles for lunch.

Day 5, Sunrise in Oia - Greece Art Trek

The next morning of our Greece Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop, the photographers got up early to shoot sunrise and I decided to join them. Town was so peaceful and the views were incredible. I chose this strategic location to capture the iconic blue domes over the caldera. It was cloudier this morning which created a peaceful feeling with softer sunrise colors that spread across the sky. I hope you, too, can feel the beauty and tranquility of this special spot.

On the first night of our Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop that my husband, Scott Williams, and I led in southern France, we arrived at our B and B and went into town that evening for a wine tasting and amazing dinner at a Michelin-star restaurant. The food was out of this world, the weather was perfect for dining outside, and our new group was great company!

The next morning, our painters stayed at our b and b and painted right there since the grounds were so beautiful.The light raking across the balcony and shutters was so dramatic, and I loved how the gnarly trees framed the composition to make a window within a window. Meanwhile, the photographers visited a nearby 11th century Abbey and took some incredible photographs. We met up later that day and headed to the nearby town of Arles for lunch.

Meanwhile the photographers climbed every nook and cranny in town in search for the perfect shot, and others chose to shop or relax with a snack, soaking in the gorgeous view over the caldera.

Villefranche and Monte Carlo - French Riviera Art Trek

Just Sold! On our Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop that my husband, Scott Williams, and I led in the French Riviera we all went in different directions on the third day. I took the painters to this beautiful scenic overlook while Scott drove the photographers along the corniches in search of the best vantages and photographs, while others relaxed at the pool at the hotel.

That afternoon, we explored the bustling old city of Monaco and later that evening tried our hand at the casinos. One person in our group even won $336 on the slot machines! That evening we dined al fresco on a delicious three course meal, enjoying the company of new friends.
