Jimmy Longacre_subjective realist landscape paintings_WIND SONG

Sitting before this scene, with everything in movement, I tried to imagine what I could turn it into.  This is where design begins, right?  Seems to me, design is theoretical by nature.  Considering the spectrum of what's possible.  What can be done to a subject and why.  I knew I would select from all that was before me, and arrange it so it felt right to me.   Arrangement is our prerogative to move things around to accomplish our design.  Composition involves our commitment to how we will express the subject.  Making the marks: line, shape, direction, size, hue, value, chroma under the influence of certain principles: dominance, contrast, repetition (with variation), gradation, harmony, unity and balance.  That's really all we have to work with to try and get at our feeling and vision, but the possibilities are infinite.
