Step by Step Yorkie Pet Portrait by Texas Artist Nancy Medina

Yorkie Pet Portrait by Nancy Medina

Oil on Linen Board

A new Yorkie pet portrait commission is drying in Flower Mound Studio this week, and the pugs have not yet detected the presence of a canine interloper in their favorite napping room. This little girl is a surprise gift for her mom in Santa Fe, New Mexico, so she will be flying home there soon. I've shared the step by step process with you on my art blog - I always get the eyes and nose in first, and work out from there, it seems to be easier that way. Portraits on double oil primed linen board give you the best results, the surface is smooth enough to allow for delicate colors and shapes, but has a bit of tooth for the personality of the fur, too. This was really fun to paint, there is something very rewarding about seeing a cute little face come to life before you.

Now I am off for a bit to the Texas Hill Country in Fredericksburg, and my night as featured artist Friday from 5 to 8 pm at The Good Art Company Gallery. I hope you will stop by if you are in town, and say hello to AnnieBee and I - we would love to meet you!
