Sometimes it is the unexpected color that makes the painting move from the moment it is under construction to the last few moments when it is finished. The beauty of irises is in the bits and pieces that have browned or the little tan wrappers that hold up the glorious bundles of color. One of the first art classes I had was with a master watercolorist whose specialty was flowers and fruit. I was always impressed with her precision, her color, and how she preserved even the flaws in her subjects. I liked that. Maybe because I have a few of my own. Just a few, though.
