Butterfly Lane is one of those works that has been percolating inside me for quite some time. I love old Spanish architecture and there is an abundance of it in the Southwest. I challenged myself on this painting to tone down my usual reds and oranges and stay in the purple and blue families. I couldn't resist popping in the old clay roof tiles and the yellow pansies in front of the building to balance all the cool shadows. This work is a bit of a melting pot from my travels - The Spanish architecture is from Balboa Park, San Diego, the agapanthus is from the Dallas Arboretum, and the purple blossoms in the foreground are from Coronado Island, California.
