"Coming Together" textured aspen tree painting by Niki Gulley

In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up in into the treetops and the heavens above. Choosing calming greens against a lavender-blue peaceful sky and arranging the two main aspens so that they meet in the middle, suggests a feeling of togetherness. While organizing the outlying trees in a circular pattern and using thick, curving, bold orange brushstrokes, creates a joyful, playful mood.

"Eel Pond 1892", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel.

In 1892 this was the northwestern most edge of Eel Pond in Edgartown, Mass. The southeastern most corner was and still is about where the houses stop on the left of the far shore. 120 years of storms and Nor'Easters have eroded away, opened, and pushed the eastern edge of the pond into itself. A small, sheltered anchorage for shallow draft boats is all that is left of the once large saltwater great pond...

Hi Friends, Well, I've been very busy. Last week I put together about 45 paintings for an upcoming one day show, "Art Party" 2012. This is the second time I've been involved in this fun event that is only one day. At the art party there will be quite a few small 6x6 paintings along with about 25 framed pieces sizes 8x10 and up. If you live in the area of Houston and vicinity, and would like to come, just contact me and I'll be happy to send you an email invite!

The little painting above is just a fun little 4x4 (approx) painting I did for my daughter a couple of years ago. She's a research tech in a genetics lab and she works with mice. :) This guy is a bit cuter than most of her lab mice I think but I saw this pic and couldn't resist. I think she still keeps this little painting on her desk at work.

I listened to a very good "Artist's Helping Artist's Blog Talk" radio program today. If you are interested in hearing an interview with Peggy Kroll Roberts, (http://www.krollroberts.com) just click the link on the side bar of my blog here and you can hear the conversation with Ms. Roberts who started her career as an illustrator. I enjoyed the program because she talked about the journey she and her husband Ray Roberts have taken while making a living as full time artists. It's interesting to hear the struggles of artists who have 'made it'. Gives me hope that there is still time for the rest of us!

Thank you as always for visiting my blog and stay tuned, in coming days I'll be posting another figurative work along with a large still life that I've completed. At present, I am working on a pet portrait commission and having fun with that! Blessings...

Wisey is a wonderful Seminole woman who is known for her kindness and her weaving. I shot the reference of her weaving this fall in Wewoka, Oklahoma. This painting will appear in the Seminole Nation Museum in March and April of 2012.

I love the passion and energy in the color red, so I thought it would be fun to play with the still life I had set up of roses and make a painting where red was the dominant color. In person, seeing these roses at life size, I wanted the viewer to be swept up in the movement and emotion of this piece. Utilizing flowing spirals, weaving back and forth, playful thick and thin paint in bold, loose strokes, ruby petals emerging and disappearing, all meant to tease and excite your senses.

Winter Light is the newest geranium and daisy painting in the studio today. I am definitely on a red kick this week. I've been growing geraniums for over a decade, and last summer was so wet with so much rain my dry weather loving blossoms barely made an appearance. Imagine my excitement to find a whole aisle of geraniums at the nursery this weekend, just in time for my class at the Dallas Arboretum last Saturday. I'm going to spritz these little plants with water and talk to them and coax them into sticking around for a while. They need to earn their keep and model for a few more paintings! Ginger Jar Geraniums is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, after a busy weekend teaching at the Dallas Arboretum. I painted geraniums and white daisies for my first class demo on Saturday, and then sunflowers in the afternoon. My feet were tired but my heart was happy - teaching art is definitely becoming my favorite thing to do. We had a fun day painting in the most beautiful gardens in North Texas, and even had sunshine (after a week of rain). The Arboretum classrooms are roomy and have skylights that let in tons of natural light, and the staff and volunteers stay with us all day to lend a hand whenever needed.

I hope you will join me soon for a workshop in Flower Mound Studio, in Fredericksburg, Texas, or right back at the Dallas Arboretum again! You can find more workshop information here. Come paint with me!

I also like how sometimes the difference between realism and abstraction isn't that great at all, and in this case, by just inverting and adding tree trunks to Elizabeth Padgett's abstract painting, the result can become a realistic scene in "Passionate Embrace."

The Brickyard still has bits and pieces of its past strewn about. The smokestack is in danger of collapse. Yet it is the most memorable and visible remainder of times past. I wander down the dirt path towards it with images of my past visits in my mind. But I was unprepared for winter sun's late, warm reddish light glancing off the edge of the chimney as I turned the last corner on at woods end. I positioned myself upon a western slope to capture this view as the sun went down...

A Touch of Green on the Arroyo by David Forks

This is a scene along an arroyo in Big Bend National Park. It was painted from photos taken in July of 2011. Most of the state experienced one of the worst droughts in recent history, and I found it very interesting how the flora nearest the arroyo was green while the majority of the desert plants were barely clinging to life.

The photo of this painting is not very good. I had a very difficult time getting a usable image of this painting because of its' size.

THIS was just for fun. Did not have my usual tools with me when wanting to do this landscape drawing. So out came the I-Pad and with my finger and an I-Pad app a quick drawing was done. The new tools that are availabe are just amazing. It was fun and quick way to draw. Completed in about 30 minutes and that was with learning the tools on the app.

Always trying to learn something new and this also gave me new insight on colors and values.

We are looking for Nancy “The Guardian” Darling so named because of her help with rescue dogs. She often travels with a large pack of dogs which hampers her ability to shoot but that does not prevent her from trying. She uses the dogs to attract unsuspecting subjects then while they are being distracted...she shoots. It is a devious but very effective plan. I hear she and her pack will be heading up to Alaska to participate in the Iditarod...that may be a false lead...just be on the lookout...

Rose Arbor is another new picket fence painting in Flower Mound Studio today. After a day in the office working on budget spreadsheets and a 32 page publishing contract, my brain needed red roses and a dose of serenity. A nice mocha coffee with whipped creme and real chocolate shavings on top would also be nice...and a foot massage. Unfortunately, I'll have to wait on those last items. The paintbrushes need washing and the pugs need bedtime walkies. If I hurry, I'll have just enough time to read a chapter or two out of my new Connie Willis book, All Clear, the sequel to her previous book, Blackout. This painting was inspired by a gorgeous autumn day at the Dallas Arboretum. I was drawn to this magical little spot because it was so tranquil there that day, that you just wanted to sit and enjoy the scenery on this bench nestled across the water. The brilliant colors of the fall foliage, the crystal clear sky, and the soft light raking across the lily pond caught my eye. I liked how the late afternoon shadows were being cast and golden highlights were forming, adding to a peaceful, but happy feeling.

Delphiniums of Coronado is a new painting in the studio, created for a special client who wanted a painting of a picket fence with delphiniums. She gave me free rein with the design, so I am hoping she likes it when she sees it! This painting is based on the beautiful cottage gardens of Coronado, California, where flower growing is a very serious passtime. Perfect weather, perfect soil, and a giant Flower Show competition each year all combine to give flower junkies like myself a bit of nirvana every time I visit! I am heading back here in just a few weeks, and hope to share photos with you then of my trip.

This is a head study I did last Friday in the portrait session that I have been involved with at the Woodlands Art League. It's a great opportunity to get with other artists and share ideas and to practice painting the face or figure. This is not my forte' of course...I really want to get a lot better at painting portraits but I try and I learn as I am going. This young woman's name is Rhonda and she did a great job sitting for us which is not an easy task. I told Rhonda I would post it so that her mom and fiance' could see the painting. Rhonda thought it looked like her so I am happy that I was able to get a likeness but my main goal is to get a nice painting. Now that I have posted it, I can see there are a couple of things I should do next time- for instance the shadow side of Rhonda's face should softened a bit I think. Select your color scheme and paint. Well, I didn't like what appeared, so I took I wet brush and got rid of all my hard edges. Then I decided to put some gold paint on it. Heart's Hyacinths and Sunflowers is the newest painting in the studio. We had a very busy day, with AnnieBee and I hosting a special guest student for a day-long art class. Judy and I painted hyacinths and tiny sunflowers, while AnnieBee and her foster sister, Hannah, supervised. Judy did a beautiful job on her painting, and she and I both agreed one can never have too much bright color!

Hannah appreciated adding a new fan to her list of admirers. As for Anniebee, other than trying to attack her own reflection in the front door panel, barking at her sister, and digging all the stuffing out of her new bed and spitting it on the studio floor, she was a perfect hostess.

I delivered this painting to The Seminole Nation Museum in Wewoka, OK yesterday to be part of my exhibit starting in March. The painting was done from a small black and white historical photo which belongs to the museum. Wewoka takes it name from this creek which translates to barking waters in the Seminole tongue. The subjects of the painting are members of the tribe called Freedmen. The Seminoles accepted freed slaves into their tribe as members around the time of the Civil War.

I love to paint pansies. Pansies and roses are probably my favorite flowers. I like sunflowers too but pansies are so colorful. Color is king I think. :) This is one of my few flow blue pieces. Wish I had more but they are pretty expensive so I buy the Wabi Sabi ones. I pick these up where I can. Usually they are chipped or the lid is missing or something. This sugar bowl has no lid but it makes a perfect flower pot. I like Wabi Sabi things. If you don't know what Wabi Sabi means, here it is in a nutshell: Wabi-Sabi is a traditional Japanese idea based on the acceptance of transience. It also means seeing beauty in imperfection, impermanence, incompletion and decay. This sort of beauty can be found both in nature and in man-made things.  Thanks for visiting my blog today!

Painted with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives so that this canvas is loaded with texture and bursting with color, flickering autumn leaves seem to almost dance in a gentle breeze. I wanted this scene to be filled with movement and energy, so I incorporated a lot of diagonal and curving shapes in the design to suggest that feeling. While combining short staccato strokes along with long sweeping passes with my palette knives also increase that sense of motion. I hope you, too, can feel the excitement of walking through the woods on a beautiful fall day, letting your cares slip away and your spirit being invigorated.

I did this painting a month or so ago and forgot that I did not post it! That's where my head is these days...this painting will be in the upcoming Art Party show that I'm in on February 4. The info is on my Facebook page if you are interested in coming and live in the Houston area. Would love to see you. Art Party is a one day event. My friend Jimmy McDonald puts it on in his studio which at one time was his home. It's a very fun event with fabulous food, live entertainment and a variety of very good art. I am proud that Jim asked me to come again. This will be my second 'art party'. :) I'll be selling some of these smaller paintings at very very affordable prices.

On anther note, I read a great article last night. Would like to share it with you. This article makes a wonderful argument for why the arts are so important in our everyday lives. Sugar Bowl Sunflower is a small study, a new painting just finished that was inspired by the larger version I posted on my blog yesterday. I'm already planning my inventory for Artscape at the Dallas Arboretum, March 16-18 and small pieces are very important to that show, as well as the larger pieces. It's the only outdoor show I do each year!

I'm hoping the tulips will be in full bloom again, and the weather is kind to us 100 or so artists in our tents under the trees. Last year gusts of wind took a few tents sailing, and the year before a snowstorm shut the show down one day early. Despite wind, snow, or rain, I still had wonderful clients show up in their winter clothes making their annual sojourn to visit my booth. This is definitely the most enjoyable art show each year, because it is in the most beautiful flower gardens in Texas. Mark your calendars for a fun day in the sun! (see, I am thinking positive about the weather here!) I hope you will join me.

Simple Joys Sunflowers and Larkspur is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio today, and celebrates a bit of happiness in my home. When I get tired or discouraged, I find little things to give me something to look forward to. I love making my first cup of tea in the morning, adding creme and sugar, and that first warm sip. I love the ritual of waking up the puggies, giving each of them a kiss and telling them how much I adore them and asking if they are ready for breakfast. (The answer, as you can imagine, is always a resounding YES!). If I try, I can find over a dozen little joys that make up each day. When times are hard or I am sad, I use each of them like stepping stones to make my way through. I hope you have a simple happiness in your life each day, something that keeps you strong on your journey. If you don't, I highly recommend getting a pug or three.... These little fatties always make me laugh.

Stolen Moments Sunflowers and Lilacs is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, and ended a long day of painting yesterday. Today, after letting it rest overnight, I brightened up the yellow petals of the sunflowers, and made the peachy oranges of the cantaloupe more intense.
I had to take several breaks away from the canvas to play with the Studio Director, who acquired two new toys today. It's the perfect reason to step away from the work and get a different perspective on it before it's finished. Nothing like stepping over the varied pieces of a stuffed yellow ducky to keep a painter on her toes....

My art agent doesn't want sunflowers, she says they are not "in," my favorite gallery wants new paintings without sunflowers, and my studio is already filled to the gills with sunflowers. And yet, the urge to paint them again has overpowered me, kind of like the urge to eat that fruit tart my husband brought into the studio tonight with a dollop of whippy creme on top. Will power is definitely not my strong point, already, in this new year, and we're only 12 days into 2012! I hope you are doing a bit better than I am. I have not even made it to the gym yet.

Lake Como, Italy is probably my favorite spot from all of our travels. The vistas are simply breathtaking with the alps in the background, the gorgeous blue of the lake, the brightly painted buildings and the lush foliage dotting the magnificent gardens. I liked how the flowers framing this view of Bellagio mimicked the hues of the town's architecture and added a colorful contrast to the blues of the lake and distant mountains.

Red Star Daisy Delight is a small study as I work through a couple of future paintings in my mind. I always begin the painting long before I prep the canvas. Ideas about color come first, then the flower, then dark background vs light background, still life versus vignette, etc. Sometimes I see a particular part first - the separation of the petals on a gerbera daisy laying on a white cloth in the studio today made me instantly realize I would be painting red gerberas, even though I had fully prepared to do a large hydrangea still life. Sometimes it's good to go with the flow, when the muses start singing, rather than change the station...
